New series review: Wynonna Earp

Hi my hot cute girly geeks and boy geeks. Today I will be reviewing Wynonna Earp, or at least the couple of episodes that have been aired up until now (that’s just 4!!!).

Wynonna-Earp

I’m always on the look-out for new series to watch, yep, I have no life, at least not a social one (well, a partially social life). And this time I stumbled upon Wynonna Earp. Or as I call it, hopefully the female version of Supernatural, set in the Wild Wild West if Jo was still alive.

Wynonna Earp is brought to you by the syfy channel and it has that same feeling as a lot of their series. I don’t know what that is, but if you’ve been watching a lot of series you immediately can tell if it’s produced by syfy, or CW or HBO or any other network.

Wynonna_Earp_06

Originally starting out as a comic book series and riding the success of the Marvel / DC brought to our screens. It specifies as an Action/Western/Fantasy/Horror series. Yep….

According to IMDB: Based on the IDW Comic, Wynonna Earp follows Wyatt Earp’s great granddaughter as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities, and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she’s the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.

But like I said before, it feels like the female version of Supernatural, only the sisters don’t travel cross-country but stay in Purgatory, the town, not the gateway to Hell.

I mean, there is Wynonna herself, leather jacket wearing, drinking, swearing, bad-ass with a gun, older sister coming back to her hometown where just about everyone hates her. She lost her father (shot him) and her sister, has a nasty prophecy hanging above her head and a special gun that can kill demons! Oh and she is trying to protect her still alive sister. (Dean)

Wynonna_Earp_05

And we have Waverly, the younger sister, trying to bad-ass herself, bit of a dork, super smart, speaks Latin, does a lot of research, had an imaginary friend called Bobo, and wants nothing more than help big sis killing demons. (Sam)

Dominique_Provost-Chalkley_wynonnaearp_1-1

Agent Dolls, bit of a mystery man, can get his hands on some really old, creepy occult objects, knows his occult stuff, trying to teach Wynonna how to kill demons and other monsters and how to shoot. Doesn’t take shit from no-one but somehow will protect the girls. (Bobby)

WynonnaEarp_Blog_101_04

Doc Holliday, once a good-guy, now we don’t know yet, seems to be working for both parties, the good and the evil side, old but still good looking, there is some tension between him and Wynonna and you’re constantly wondering if she is gonna kill him or f*ck him. (Cas)

WYNONNA EARP -- "Keep the Home Fires Burning" Episode 102 -- Pictured: Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday -- (Photo by: Michelle Faye/Syfy/Wynonna Earp Productions)

And we have demons, not the black-eyed ones but these have red eyes, are stuck in Purgatory, again the town and trying to get out before Wynonna kills them with her special gun. If they are killed they get sucked back into hell, looks pretty cool.

So, we’re four episodes in and I kinda like it. It’s funny, I like strong female leads, it reminds me of Supernatural, I don’t know, it appeals to me for some reason.

Have you seen it? What are your thoughts? And no I haven’t read the comics so no spoilers!!!

Are you a series snob?

Hi my hot cute girly geeks and boy geeks of course. Today I want to address something that’s been bugging me for a while now.

tv-shows

Being a series snob. For those who grew up or already were adults in the 90’s and a geek things finally started to look up, series wise. (This might have happened earlier, but I was born early 80’s and grew up in the 90’s and can only talk about my own experience.) series and particularly sci-fi series became a thing.

Pre-download and pre-streaming services, yes those were scary days, we had one channel in the Netherlands supplying us with those epic series all the way from the US. You had to make sure you were home to watch it, or videotape the latest episode, 1 episode a week! Oh the horror!

untitled

But… It was something you were looking forward to, I even remember discussing episodes at length with friends prior and after it aired. There wasn’t much diversity so if it was slightly sci-fi or fantasy like, you watched it and kept on watching it until you liked it, because that was it!

The fond memories I have while watching the X-files, a couple of very obscure series I don’t even know the name of. Star Trek during dinner and my mum complaining about the gruesome prosthetics that made her loose her appetite. The adventures of Buffy and her Scooby gang and whether you had the hots for Spike or Angel. Friday night and Babylon 5 with a bowl of crisps, or chips depending on which side of the big pond you live. Cue the nostalgic feelings please.

Watching-my-favourite-TV-show

Back to today. We have basically everything on demand. Netflix on the telly, illegal downloading, semi-illegal streaming on line, DVD’s are fairly cheap if you want to wait two months. And more series than you can possibly watch in an entire lifetime, even though we, or I, try.

With the overabundance of different series I find myself getting more critical about what I watch. I have my popular regular series, namely the big 3 (SuperWhoLock) and about a dozen or so I also follow. I often start new series, but whenever the CGI is very bad, for example Grimm, I give up very easily. I do this as well with series I find too confusing (as in I don’t have to watch every freaking second or I might miss an important plot). If the story line disappoints me and it’s more of the same every damned week, bye bye series. (how many freaking doppelgangers can you have parading on the screen).

untitled1

Some series get a second go because there’s an actor on it I admire, Arrow is such a series. I love John Barrowman, but I know Oliver has been stuck on the damned island by now. Just stop with the freaking flash backs.

Some series are entertaining enough even though totally unrealistic, Scorpion anyone? Seriously you have an IQ of 170 and use Bing as a search engine???

happy-quotes-278

Also, I love crossovers! Arrow and the Flash, the Flash and Supergirl, now if someone, and I’m looking at both Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, made a Doctor Who / Sherlock crossover I would be over the moon.

But going back to my original point. I’m more critical in watching my series and not very loyal in watching it all the way towards the end. I give up when it doesn’t interest me any longer. Much faster nowadays than a couple of years ago.

Dutch Comic Con 2015

Hi my hot cute girly geeks and boy geeks of course. Dutch Comic Con happened last weekend. It was the first ever Dutch Comic Con in the Netherlands. And I attended the whole weekend.  DSC_0619

I’ve been excited for this for months, keeping up with the guests who were attending, the stands, the amazing geeky cars and planning for two whole days of cosplaying for the first time ever.

DSC_0620

And although a couple weeks prior to the start of DCC there were a lot of rumours online about the people organizing DCC and money issues, a weekend before the start, some guests started to cancel because there were no flights or hotels booked. It all turned out in the end.

DSC_0926

Because this was the first time, you can expect some things not to well organised, such as some part of the venue were really dark (sucks taking pictures), no chairs for the Q&A, getting photo ops not organised, and the organizer and vendors didn’t expect so many people. We had 16.000 for the first day! For a first time con, that’s really amazing!

DSC_0850

As expected there were a lot of people cosplaying. Not as much as you expect attending an US con. On Saturday maybe 30-40 percent and on Sunday 20 percent. But for us Dutchies that is a lot. The level of cosplay was amazing. Ok you had the crazy people wearing onesies and other really mismatched stuff, but loads of people really did put up there best show.

DSC_0884

The vendors were amazing. So much geeky stuff, so little money! You could get everything your geeky heart desired. From comics, to pop vinyl’s, to full Japanese Manga body pillows to amazing handcrafted jewellery.

DSC_0696DSC_0929

I attended Comic Con with my lovely geeky friend Nanayah (who also took all the pictures, kudos to her and her amazing camera!) The first day we stood in line for ages to get our photo ops. I bought a photo op with Osric Chau (Kevin Tran on Supernatural) and Marnix van den Broeke (he plays the Silence in Doctor Who, the werewolf on Harry Potter and Death in the Hogfather). We also made some new friends waiting in line. The Supernatural fandom is just epic!

IMG_20150328_185816

We attended the Q&A with Osric on the first and second day and I shot some vids (which I still need to upload on YouTube, I had a very busy week, sorry). We had no idea it was so crazy busy until we left the Q&A and although we did look at the merchandise, it was too busy to really buy anything.

IMG_20150328_185551

We left to get a signed photo with Osric. I presented him my homemade Gishwhes 2015 hat and some syrup waffles. And I got an unexpected hug. Osric gives the best hugs!

FB_IMG_1427715662502 DSC_0750

After that is was time for my photo op with Marnix. He was a last minute announced guest and he’s not really know for his work. I was sad to learn only 3 people bought a photo op with him on Saturday, hopefully he got more fans on Sunday. The good this was I had some time to chat with him and laugh about getting my picture taking with him. He’s freakishly tall, 2.01 m or 6’7 tall! While I am 1.67 m or 5’4. The photographer ended up getting a step stool to get both of us in the picture!

DSC_0889

We looked around some more, met up with some other friends, seeing loads of Doctors. Funny thing as you are dressed up as the Doctor and see another Doctor we greet each other with a “Doctor!” “Doctor!”

DSC_0645

We also bought two ‘dating for geeks’ comics and got them signed before getting our pictures taken with Osric, my second Osric hug in a day!

DSC_0803

The second day I went as Osgood from Doctor Who and I was early at the con, basically to buy some merchandise and I scored! Some pop vinyls and a vortex manipulator! Because Osric was going in cosplay today and he was dressed as Peter Pan, I had to get another picture with him!

DSC_0948

Nanayah and I also learned the people of Wolfcon would be attending and giving away free passes, so naturally we found them and we are going to Wolfcon in May!!!

DSC_0741

The Q&A with Marnix the second day was hilarious as was the second Q&A with Osric. Osric also used my Gishwes hat for the raffle he was holding that weekend to win a free dinner with him (too bad we didn’t win) but I did get an epic picture with Osric the second day.

DSC_0084

We bought more merchandise and I even bought my first 3 manga! And according to Tekira I did very well. I bought the first manga from: Blue Exorcist, Vampire Knight and Black Butler. I loved those! (Don’t tell anyone but I found accompanying anime online and already watched Vampire Knight and Black Butler). Tekira is very proud of me.

DSC_0774

I was absolutely dead after two days of Comic Con, but I can’t wait for next year and a new cosplay I have in mind!

That was it for this post. Love you guys!

Lots of love, your own hot cute girly geek, Mendy!

Penny Dreadful, a couple of episodes in.

Hi my hot cute girly geeks and boy geeks of course. Wow, I’m really getting back into this blogging habit and I missed it. I have so much to write about since I’ve been neglecting you all a bit. So without further ado, here’s a bit of Penny Dreadful info and why you should absolutely watch this series! And beware of spoilers as always!

c832c6e2330d0108e4c530c14b4e9d72

Synopsis according to IMDB.com:

Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, and others unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.

Synopsis according to the official website:

Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.

My thoughts:

Oh wow, this is epic, really really epic! As I watched the first couple of episodes I found myself hunger for more. All my favorite monsters, beasties and supernatural creepy crawly mixed into on TV show. Where a movie like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen failed, Penny Dreadful is succeeding! I urge you all to go watch it!

It has everything a supernatural series needs, tension, suspension, drama, excitement, mystery, horror, an amazing cast, great acting, epic monsters and gay sex.

Let’s meet the characters:

Ethan Chandler (played by Josh Hartnett): A charming American who finds himself trapped in the darkest corners of Victorian London, Ethan’s charm and brash ways are catnip to the ladies. When Sir Malcolm enlists him to help in a personal quest, Ethan meets Brona Croft, a beautiful local with a mysterious past. But behind Ethan’s bright eyes lurk dark secrets. He is running from something, and his troubling past threatens to overtake him at every turn.

s406jp

Sir Malcolm (played by Timothy Dalton): A hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest, Sir Malcolm has nonetheless paid a heavy price for his exciting career. Although his stately home is filled with marvelous souvenirs of his travels, it is devoid of family and loved ones. With Vanessa’s help, he is determined to right the wrongs of his past, but his toughest journey lies ahead.

Dalton

Vanessa Ives (played by Eva Green): Poised, mysterious and utterly composed, Vanessa is a seductive and formidable beauty full of secrets and danger. She is keenly observant — clairvoyant even — as well as an expert medium. Her supernatural gifts are powerful and useful to those around her, particularly Sir Malcolm, but they are also a heavy burden. Her inner demons are very real to her and everyone around her, and they threaten to destroy her relationships, her sanity, and her very life.

pennydreadful

Dorian Gray (played by Reeve Carney): Dorian Gray is a fabulously wealthy young gentleman who is almost unnerving in his beauty. His skin seems to radiate a golden glow of intoxicating youth and promise. A recklessly abandoned sensualist, he has a devil-may-care attitude that borders on dangerous. Nothing seems to faze him, nor are any risks too great. In fact, he is unnaturally drawn to them.

penny_dreadful_dorian_poster

Brona Croft (played by Billie Piper): Brona is a poor Irish immigrant to Victorian London trying to escape a dark and sordid past. The Gaelic meaning of her name is “sadness,” yet she remains lovely, spirited, and erotically alive. She forms a bond with Ethan Chandler, who will do anything for her.

penny_dreadful_ver4

Sembene (played by Danny Sapani): Sembene is an African man with ritual face scarring who serves as Sir Malcolm’s sentry and confidant. He has an air of mystery about him and his heroic efforts will prove invaluable to Sir Malcolm in his personal quest.

penny-dreadful-sembene

Dr. Victor Frankenstein (played by Harry Treadaway): More Romantic poet than surgeon, Dr. Frankenstein is a tender, gentle soul who is fascinated by the mysteries of life and death. He has dedicated himself to researching what makes something live, and has sacrificed everything for his scientific pursuit. But he is playing with fire, and his research pays off in shocking ways with devastating consequences.

penny-dreadful-frankenstein

The Creature (played by Rory Kinnear): Dr. Frankenstein’s original creation, The Creature is a hideous, humanoid monster who nevertheless has a deep and anguished soul. His horrible appearance and unusual “birth” have left him a lonely, misunderstood outcast, and he is furious at his creator over his unfortunate fate.

Are you watching this series? If so let me know what your thoughts are, or if you are planning to watch it. It is truly epic and I’m eager for every new episode. And the good news is, it got renewed for a second season as well, not to mention half the cast appeared in Doctor Who, which is always a good thing.

52/52/52 challenge, January progress.

Hi my hot cute girly geeks and boy geeks of course. My 52/52/52 challenge, how is it coming along? Well, here’s the update from my first month:

52-52-52

Movies:

  • Sherlock season 2, episode one: a Scandal in Belgravia
  • Sherlock season 2, episode two: the Hound of Baskerville
  • Sherlock season 2, episode three: Reichenbach Falls
  • Sherlock season 3, episode 1: the Empty Hearse
  • The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug
  • How to train your Dragon
  • Rise of the Guardians
  • Sherlock season 3, episode 2: the sign of three
  • Frozen
  • Monsters University
  • Monsters Inc
  • Sherlock season 3, episode 3: His last Vow
  • Supernatural season 7
  • Supernatural season 8
  • The hunger games catching fire
  • Thor: the dark world

Yes I am counting the Sherlock episodes as 1 movie, come one, they’re an hour and a half long and even the creators say each episode is a movie on its own. So there you have it!

Books:

  • How to train your dragon 1, by Cressida Cowell, read by David Tennant.
  • How to train your dragon 2: How to be a pirate, by Cressida Cowell, read by David Tennant.
  • The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
  • Liveship Traders 2:  the Mad Ship, by Robin Hobb

I didn’t read as many books as I wanted, and if you count accurately, I only read two. Been too busy and too tired to read a lot. I hope I can make February a bit more bookish. But since I’m travelling a lot more for work again, I’m positive I can pick up my reading to make a serious dent in my 52 books a year challenge.

Where I used to read a lot in my spare time, it doesn’t distract me as it used to be. I don’t know if it has anything to do with me getting older, but it’s like I can’t seem to find the peace to sit down and read. I need to be busy, so that’s why I basically only read before bed and during travelling. The rest of the time I’m too fidgety as it where to do anything else.

I mean, even when I watch TV I’m doing something else simultaneously, like knitting, or writing or whatever. But this is what I did last month. God, I watch a lot of TV. Hihi, but it’s my relax moment after work and I happily watch a couple of episodes of a series per night. By the looks of my list so far I would have bigger trouble getting to finish my reading challenge then my movie watching challenge.

How are your challenges coming along? Let me know!

Love, your own hot cute girly geek, Mendy.
