How Captain Jack Harkness came sashaying into my life

Hi my hot cute girly geeks and boy geeks of course. Let me tell you the story of how Captain Jack Harkness came sashaying into my life.

First, let me explain I’m not talking about the ‘real’ Captain Jack Harkness (although I wouldn’t mind him occupying my house, cuddling up on the couch and claiming a spot in my bed). I’m talking about the furry Captain Jack Harkness.

In February a cat wandered into my backyard. For about a week he kept coming back each day, complaining loudly and keeping my neighbours and myself awake at night. After a week I took pity and because of the bad weather I provided shelter in my shed and started feeding him.

A week later he still came back daily and spend his nights in my shed. I contacted the local animal shelter and someone came by to check if he was chipped. He also got temporary collar with the telephone number on it from the shelter. Actually, funny story, the collar was one of those hospital bands you get with your name on it, and it didn’t fit, I had to attach two together to make a proper fitting collar.

I also made sure he was being listed online as a ‘found’ cat on different websites.

I already named him Jack, as in Captain Jack Harkness, and he seemed to respond to that name. (He wasn’t neutered and a real ladies man.) Jack needed to walk around with the collar for a week to see if he went back to the original owners.

Needless to say, after a week no call and the animal shelter contacted me to pick up Jack. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to say goodbye because they had a limited window of time to pick him up so my mum took care of that while I was on my way home from work.

Jack needed to stay in quarantine for 2 weeks, so again the original owners were able to pick him up and after two weeks if nobody claimed him he would be neutered and put up for adoption.

My mum and I were arguing about possibly adopting Jack and we frequently contacted the animal shelter to check how Jack was doing. The animal Shelter discovered he had gingivitis and they would clean it as soon as he was put under for the neutering.

The last day of those two weeks my mum and I were anxiously waiting until we could call the shelter to check how his operation had gone until… the shelter contacted me. The original owners picked him up and took him home, with no other plans made to get him neutered or to fix his gums.

I mean, your cat is away from home for over 5 weeks and after 5 weeks you decide it’s time to go look for him? And you let a cat of 3 years old wander outside without being neutered? Even the people of the animal shelter were very disappointed because they figured out Jack was a really sweet cat and they can’t do anything if the original owners claim him. They even advised me that if Jack showed up at my house again I might call the animal police and report the original owners as neglect.

So, on good Friday we learned his was being picked up by his original owners and guess who came back at Easter Sunday? Yep, Jack came back home, still not neutered. I was trying to give the original owners a chance so I didn’t feed him or provided him shelter. After a couple of days where Jack kept coming back I caved again and started feeding him.

I called the animal shelter again and explained the story, they would give my contact info to the original owners so I could talk to them.

After a couple of days, I got a call from the original owners and explained what happened, that Jack was in my garden again and it was important that if they wanted to pick him up and take him to the vet I would do my best to help them. I also asked them if they might want to put Jack up for adoption. The owners would think about it and call me back.

Another week gone and I slowly tried to integrate Jack into my home, keeping him inside for a couple of hours at a time and feeding and cuddling him. Oh and the owners didn’t call me. So I tried to call them, left messages and finally I got someone on the phone. Explained again I wanted to adopt him and get him to a vet asap!

They would call me after the weekend with a decision, yeah right! Another week had gone by and finally the original owners decided to give him to me. I made sure I had some papers for them to sign to officially give Jack to me.

A couple of days after they signed I kept Jack inside and he was finally taken to the vet. Oh and I called the animal shelter to tell them the good news. They were equally happy! He already got his annual shots at the shelter so that would save me a bit of cash.

Jack was taken to the vet to get neutered, chipped and checked for kidney problems and cat aids. He came clean!

We decided to take Jack to my mum for a couple of weeks so he had the chance to heal properly and to get rid of all the scabs he got from fighting all the time outside.

Last week he finally came home and is one happy and purring cat (which he didn’t do the first couple of weeks.) James, my other cat tolerates him and hopefully they will get along in the end.

And that is the story about how Captain Jack Harkness came sashaying into my life.

He sheds like crazy and I’m constantly covered in his sticky hairs (James’ hairs don’t stick a lot) eats like crazy, makes a mess of my house, covering it in cat litter but when he comes for a cuddle I totally melt.

I never planned to get a second cat, but this one choose me and what more can I say? I am now the proud owner of Sir James and Captain Jack Harkness, or is it the other way round?

Chronicles of Riddick, a movie review.

Hi hot cute girly and boy geeks of mine. This time a movie review. The Chronicles of Riddick and the second movie in this franchise.

Synopsis according to the official website:

Vin Diesel (XXX, The Fast and the Furious) stars in this electrifying, special-effects-fueled action spectacular! After years of outrunning ruthless bounty hunters, escaped convict Riddick suddenly finds himself caught between opposing forces in a fight for the future of the human race. Now, waging incredible battles on fantastic and deadly worlds, this lone, reluctant hero will emerge as humanity’s champion – and the last hope for a universe on the edge of annihilation. Powered by groundbreaking visual effects and pulse-pounding, thrill-a-minute action!

My personal thoughts:

Meh, I liked the movie, but the first one was better. Riddick is on the run from bounty hunters and he learns the Imam, he saved in the first movie is looking for him. So he decides to pay a visit. Of course this doesn’t end well. The necromongers are invading the planet. Come on, what kind of shitty name is necromonger?

The idea is cool, but the executing is not so well done. The Imam also tells Jack is in prison, thanks to Riddick and now he feels obligated to go save her. But first he has a run in with these necromangers. And goes with them willingly only because a woman in a tight dress leads him away? Weak, very weak.

Anyhow. The necromangers are turning the people and destroying the planet and Riddick escapes them, but lets him get captured by bounty hunters to bring him to the planet… Crematoria. Ok, who was assigned for naming stuff in this movie? Can someone please fire him, now!

He finds Jack, but she has grown up, and calls herself Kyra. And she is pissed at Riddick, apparently he lied to her. Well duh, he is a murderer and stuff. So no shiny eyes for her. Although those strange animals that live in the prison are cool. Good CGI.

Now Riddick has to escape the prison. Only problem, it rotates like crazy and a sun is nearby it, so temperatures are kind of hot every now and then. But thanks to the bounty hunters cutting of their means to escape, they have to run across the surface of the planet, in order to outrun the sun and the bounty hunters, going for the only ship on the planet left. And they almost make it. Riddick and his team of inmates.

Kyra got caught by the necromangers and Riddick is just barely saved by a fellow Furian from burning to an extra crispy piece of bacon. So now he goes after the necromangers, again, and tries to save Kyra, again.

He finally kills the head necromonger but Kyra dies (and the Imam is long dead) but the necromonger way is to keep what you kill, so now he is the leader of the necromangers. And we have to wait till next year what comes of this.

I know this is a rather sarcastic review. I like the movie and the way it’s filmed. But I don’t agree with the choices Riddick makes. The first movie we see him struggle and doing what is in his best interest, combined with a little humanity. And in this movie, he is growing soft. Too bad. Thanks to that I rate it a 6.5 out of 10

Pitch Black, a movie review.

Hi hot cute girly and boy geeks of mine. I had myself a mini Riddick Marathon and I loved it. So of course I had to review it for you, as always there are some spoilers.

Synopsis according to the official website:

When their ship crash-lands on a remote planet, the marooned passengers soon learn that escaped convict Riddick (Vin Diesel) isn’t the only thing they have to fear. Deadly creatures lurk in the shadows waiting to attack in the dark, and the planet is rapidly plunging into the utter blackness of a total eclipse. With the body count rising, the survivors are forced to turn to Riddick and his eerie eyes to guide them through the darkness to safety. With time running out, there’s only one rule: Stay in the light.

My thoughts:

Like a lot of people I watched Chronicles of Riddick first, in the movie theater and I loved it, so naturaly I wanted to see the first movie made. One word: Amazing.

The movie starts with a shot of some people frozen and a voice giving comment. Oh my, what a voice. When suddenly we learn it’s a spaceship and it’s being pierced by meteorites. Then the voice shuts up. Oh my again. Vin Diesel has a magnificent, rich, sexy voice. Makes me melt and all wobbly in the knees.

Vin Diesel plays Richard B. Riddick. Murderer and escaped convict. And I love how he plays a game with the survivors of the crash, following them, lurking in the shadows, showing up unexpected in places. So we learn in the beginning of the movie only the murderer Riddick. Amongst the survivors is a boy named Jack who has an interest in Riddick and tries to mimic him in how he looks and talks. It’s adorable in a creepy way.

Although this is a classic survivor stranded story it gets its edge with Riddick and his eerie eyes. Like he explains to Jack: “First you gotta kill a few people, then you got to get sent to a slam, where they tell you you’ll never see daylight again. You dig up a doctor, and you pay him 20 menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on your eyeballs.”

I also love the camera work on the world and his suns, being different colors. It gives is a real eerie feeling to it. And thank God for some good CGI, the monsters look amazing! They really build up the suspense of first small little critters to full fledge flying monsters. And by now Riddick seems a little more human. But also still giving only about himself to get of this planet. At every decision Riddick keeps you wondering, does he serves his own peruses or does he help out the group of survivors, who keep getting killed off one by one.

The big scene between Riddick and Fry is amazing. Riddick trying to win her over to leave the rest of them and just accepting his hand and fly of the damned planet. You see the struggle Fry has and also the tension between them. But Fry finally chooses to give her life for the group. So she and Riddick return to get the two remaining survivors, the Imam and Jack, who turns out to be a girl, not a boy.

And while they return to the ship they are again under attack, Riddick holds them off but gets hurt badly. So Fry goes out of the light to find him. The scene where she has him in his arms and yells at him to not give up is beautiful. And so the ending is shocking, Fry dying while being pierced by one the monsters and flown out into the abyss.

I love this movie, I love Vin Diesel, I love his eyes, and I love the suspension and tension. Rate 8.5 out of 10 for me. So watch this movie!
