Synopsis:

Ava knows much more, and feels much more than she is allowed to. When she starts questioning her origins and the destruction of Earth, things go horribly wrong for her. She is saved by a Minoan boy from an attempted kidnapping on her life – the perpetrators are evil Zulus and their dark ancient magic. Humans and Minoans are forbidden to interact with each other, and as she is taken back to their village she finds out why – they know of her, her kind and her destiny to save a dying race. Ava must rid them from the Council’s ruling and free the galaxy of The Shadow. Her destiny is to rise above the fall, because within her soul is the key to an archaic weapon that has been missing in the mix of a genetic code since the time of the ancients. As the prophecy unfolds she learns of her bloodline – a bloodline that makes her less human than she could ever have imagined. She alone has the power to destroy or save, but the mind-shift is a horrible thing. Ava will become what she hates to save the ones she loves. Beaten, poisoned, possessed and betrayed by her own emotions, she has no choice but to rise above it all… for that is her Destiny.

And as a treat for you guys, the prologue:

All my life, I had searched for something, something I thought I ought to be. I felt like I was living someone else’s life, waiting for the awakening of my own. I felt like an empty shell burning for life. That was, until the day I lay dying in the prince’s chambers. I could no longer feel the pain from the tear in my gut. The only sensation left was a hollowed-out feeling that I had made a huge mistake in assuming that taking my own life, would have stopped the ancestors’ spirit from raging out. I had given up. I didn’t want to see myself killing the ones I loved. I was the Chosen one, but I threw it all away for what I thought would save a life. Could you end a life to save a life? I did, and I have regretted it ever since. I realized then that things like me are not meant to exist. What had been missing my whole life? It was I. To find myself, I had to lose myself in the worst possible way. The consequences of my actions became the legend of The Broken.

Raksha by Frankie Rose, a book promo

Hi my lovely hot cute girly geeks, and boy geeks of course.

A quick book promo for you guys until the review is up, later this week. And this book is a must-buy! I rate it 5 out of 5 stars,  and for the ones who know me, I usually don’t rate that high!

Blurb:

picShe has no name.

She has her knives, her training, and her halo.

The first and second give her the ability to defeat the opponents she is pitted against each month. The third frees her from pain and fear. From any kind of emotion at all. Everything is as it should be. Everything is as it should be, until…

Fear… Pain… Anger… Happiness… Desire… Guilt…

Love.

When a newly named Kit escapes the Sanctuary after killing her best friend, the last thing she needs is another knife in her hand. Or Ryka, the damaged, beautiful blond boy, whom she refuses to let save her. The sights and sounds of Freetown are new, yet one thing is familiar: the matches. The only difference? Where the blood in the Sanctuary landed only on the Colosseum floor, Kit will quickly learn that a river of red runs through Freetown’s very streets.

Without her halo, the inhabitants of Kit’s new home consider her saved, but is that really the case? Would she be better off free of the guilt associated with all the blood on her hands, or is the love of one boy worth living through all the pain?

Raksha is the call of the dead. It is the rumbling chant for fresh blood from the other side, the demand for sacrifice. The Colosseum is behind Kit. The fighting pits await.

Raksha excerpt:bookmark-2inx8in-h-front

I mmm doubtfully, scratching Jada behind her ears. She seems to like that. Cai’s face is gone now, although who knows how long the reprieve will be. When I look up, Ryka is watching me pet Jada.

“She likes you,” he says.

“You sound surprised.”

“I’m not. My sister’s a good judge of character. If Liv likes you that pretty much means everyone else will. Including my fickle dog.” He whistles softly and Jada pricks her ears at the sound.

“And you?” I ask.

He smiles. “Seriously?”

I nod, and Ryka’s mouth pulls up to one side in a way that makes my heart race. He looks wicked.

“Well, we’re friends. In that weird way where you’re eternally mad at me, and I’m eternally imagining what you look like naked.”

“What!” I go to slap his arm but he ducks out of reach, grinning. From the way my insides react to his words, it feels like I’ve swallowed something entirely too hot. Is this normal? Is this what liking someone feels like? It’s confusing and frustrating and frankly—okay, I’ll admit it—kind of wonderful. But what the hell am I supposed to do with that? How do I change who I am, sixteen years of fighting, a life of blood? How do I trade in all that confrontation for something a little sweeter? I think it’s probably too late.

“I really didn’t do myself any favours when I met you, did I? You still don’t trust me?” Ryka tips his head forward, smiling ruefully at his feet when I shake my head. “In that case I suppose it’s pointless asking if you’ve fallen in love with me yet?”

The boy is determined to make me die a death this evening. It’s all I can do not to choke as I shake my head. “Sadly, no. I don’t think I want to kill you anymore, though. So there’s that.”

In the moonlight, Ryka’s eyes bow as he smiles broadly. “There is that. We’ll have to see what we can do to change your mind, though. I’ve never been very good at waiting for anything I want.” He shoves me gently with his shoulder and my heart stumbles.

“You want me?”

Ryka’s smile is devastatingly sharp. “You own me, remember. And now, after the other night…well, I guess I kinda own you, too.”

Charmeine by Emily Guido promo blog tour, free copy + new review!

Hi my hot cute girly and boy geeks of course. Today I have something special for you. Remember my author friend and also guest blogger Emily Guido? Her first novel Charmeine is free today on Smashwords. So I urge, no demand you all go over there, use the code below and pick up a copy of your own, of this marvelous and amazing book.

Untitled-3

I got to know Emily when I just started blogging last year and we became good internet galpals. Because unfortunately she lives in the US and I’m stuck here in the Netherlands. But that isn’t a problem for an awesome friendship.

She asked me to read her first book Charmeine. Back then it was all her novels combined in one. And because she was a self publishing author (huge respect) it was also unedited. But even without proper editing I could see this book was a jewel. I read it within 4 days, skipping many hours of sleep to finish it.

Luckily a publisher also found her books worth printing and now her first book Charmeine, where it all began is split in multiple books. I am so happy for Emily that she is given the chance to fulfill this dream of hers. I mean, she wrote 100.000 words in under a week! She has a family, work, she studies. Talk about a powerful woman and an inspiration to many aspiring authors out there (including myself). She never gave up fighting for her baby to be published. Even throughout some nasty reviews or unsupporting people, she still continues and I count myself lucky to be one of her friends.

So when she asked me to help her promote her book Charmeine on my blog I didn’t have to think about it and I actually managed to find some other blogger friends who were happy to help as well. (Ah the wonderful book blogging community).

And doing this promo tour gave me a good excuse to finally delve into her first book again, now completely edited, revised and as it should be. And I still loved every second reading it. I will be adding a new review in this post, but first here is the promo tour with all the information you need to know, and more important, the link and code for a free copy on smashwords.

New review:

So here is my own revised review about the debut novel Charmeine by Emily Guido. To start off with my own words “Move over Edward, there’s a new player in town called Tabbruis.”

I am and always be a vampire girl; although I love a good werewolf novel, or some other supernatural creepy critters, vampires are and will forever be my favorite “monster”.

And I do love a story that isn’t the same as every other story out there. I mean, how many Dracula rip-offs can a girl read and still be enjoying herself. Let me tell you, not much.

I was so surprised by Charmeine. Angels who turn out to be vampires, who turn out to be angels? Talk about a surprising plot twist. The love couple of the century, forever soul mates, split up and doomed to roam the earth without each other. Until a strong urge and a Billy Joel concert brings them together, although they don’t know it.

I love how Charmeine is written. This lovely and sweet teacher. Without knowing her past, a good sense of right and wrong, but also carefree and living in the moment. Enjoying normal things like rose scented body lotion and a love for the ocean. She could be any of us girls. These little things make her that you can identify with a character. She isn’t flawed, she has doubts and quirks just like any of us, but that’s what makes her human.

And the beautiful and stunning Tabbruis. Living for decades, not knowing where he’s from. Waking up with a sudden urge for blood and for years take what you can get, not really caring for what happens after. Until, one day, he redeems himself and stops with the killing and murdering. Trying to do good. You feel for him, for his tiredness, not knowing his place in the world. Just a couple of friends and a code to live by, which he doesn’t agree on.

And the funny and young Shane. Working his ass of (excuse my language) to finally have enough money so he can ask his girl to marry him. Now that’s a proper gentleman. He wants to build a proper life and family of his own, growing up in a foster home with Charmeine looking after him as his big sister.

So what would you do if you find out that you walked into your soul mate, but he is supposed to be this big bad evil and you are on the side of the light? You are natural sworn enemies and supposed to kill each other. The saying love conquers all really does apply here, but also that you have to fight for that love, to keep and hold it.

The book is written in a fast pace, you will have trouble to put it down and go to sleep. It’s funny, thrilling, romantic and don’t we all wish we have our own Tabbruis in our lives? That tall dark mysterious stranger with a dark edge but a heart of gold?

This is definitely one of my favorite vampire / romance novels out there. And although a lot of supernatural romance novels feel like otherworldly and not gonna happen in a million years, this feels like there really can be a Tabbruis and Charmeine walking around.  And like I said before, you need to read it. You have no excuse now to not read it, it’s free! All you need to do is click that link! And if you enjoyed it as much as I did. Go to Amazon, support this amazing author by buying her other novels, you won’t be disappointed, cause the story doesn’t end with Charmeine.

Thankfully not, because Charmeine leaves you craving for more!

Last time I gave it 4 out of 5 stars, this was due to the fact of the unedited process. Well, I don’t have that excuse any more. So I upped my rating to 5 out of 5 stars!

Love, your own hot cute girly geek, Mendy.

Ashes & Ice Release Day Blitz

Hi my hot cute girly and boy geeks of course, today, another book blitz for you guys. The Ashes and Ice release day blitz. And let me tell you, this book looks absolutely awesome:

Cover

About the author:

authorpic4Rochelle grew up dreaming up stories. When she entered high school, she tucked away her creative side and jumped head-first into academics, work, and service projects. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Political Science and Communication when she was twenty years old. After years away from her writing, Rochelle picked up a pen and started fleshing out a character sketch that she outlined when she was twelve. That sketch was the start of the Ashes and Ice story. Rochelle lives in the DC metro area with her husband and daughter. By day she works as a behavioral therapist. By night, she is a dreamer and is busy tapping out new stories on her keyboard.

About the book:

She is desperate to remember.
He is aching to forget.
Together, they are not broken.
But together, one may not survive.

Jade wakes up with no memory of her past and blood on her hands.

Plagued by wicked thoughts, she searches for answers. Instead, she finds a boy who doesn’t offer her answers, but hope. But sometimes, when nightmares turn into reality and death follows you everywhere, hope is not enough.

LUST. LOVE. LOSS. Sometimes, all that is left are Ashes and Ice

A few awesome and appetizing excepts:

Excerpt #1

Jade

The girl’s glassy, dead eyes stare into me, through me, pierce me with a fierce urgency, with a wicked accusation. The blood is still on my hands.

Red hair, blue eyes, a constellation of freckles on pale skin. She was fragile and innocent, a lovely thing. That is what I think until I see the gashes on her wrists and throat. With her blood spilling out, she looks delicious. She’s mine. Possessiveness shocks me, stabs into me. I run, tearing away from a craving I don’t understand.

Breathless, I grit my teeth and run harder, faster.

My feet pound against the earth, away from the lifeless body and toward the lights of the city lingering on the horizon. Rot and death linger in my nostrils. Unscarred skin stretches taut over my freezing bones. Echoes of an empty memory reverberate in my mind, taunting me. The ice chases me, clutches me, and bites at my heels, sending shivers up my spine. The ice wants me back, but I run forward, toward the lights, toward the heat, toward a world that burns me, because I have no other choice.

The lights are so close. Heat scalds my skin.

Images race through my mind, paralyzing me. I skid to a stop, my boots digging into the mud. The vision’s blurred edges materialize into solid shapes.

I gasp.

A new horror rakes my insides. Desperation propels me forward; the pictures nagging at my seams threaten to tear me apart.

Scorching fire licks over my skin. In my vision, I contort like a vile, ugly creature, eyes as black as decay. My frame hunches over the small, dead girl, like a demon looming over a defenseless child. Her blood drips from my mouth.

I lick my lips and taste only salty sweat.

I run, desperate to trample the vision under my feet, to crush it deep into the ground.

I refuse to believe the image, refuse to acknowledge the monster within me demanding to be unleashed—and the possibility it has already been unbound. An unrelenting tide of fear washes over me. Past the denial, the fear, and the hope, I think I can still taste her.

The cold stillness inside me cracks open just as the lights of the city slam into me.

Excerpt #2

 Connor

Tears burn. I never realized it before, but they do. Tears reach down my throat and settle in my gut until the pain cripples me. I clutch my stomach as I look into the casket. His face doesn’t even look the same. Bloated like a Mardi Gras float, discolored like a mannequin. This isn’t my father.

But it is.

If I have learned anything in my short life, it is this: funerals are bullshit. People dress in carefully pressed black suits. Parents give me “meaningful” nods as if that could ease the grief. It doesn’t.

Then there are the kids from school, the ones dragged along by their parents. People drag their kids along as if filling the church was a necessary thing. As if the more pews filled somehow expedite the dead’s trip to heaven. I doubt it does. Maybe some of the girls went shopping to buy just the right outfit so their cleavage to respectability ratio was just right, or  their ass to waist ratio was cinched properly.

People sit in the pews dressed in their finest let’s-go-pay-our-respects-to-the-dead-guy-we-never-knew wear, smacking the gum in their mouths, cupping cellphones so they can LOL any comment  buzzing in, and drumming their fingers because the pastor is going on too long.  All they want to do is go home, sneak in a make-out session with their girlfriends, eat their dinners, and maybe catch a 7 o’clock movie.

I hate these kids. The ones who stare at me, roll their eyes, and yawn. The ones who trip me at school and slam me into lockers. The ones who sit in a pew, contributing to the headcount, while I sit up here in front, holding back the tears fighting to make their appearance. I swallow them down. I won’t cry. Not here. Not with these people.

Dad’s funeral should be an empty church with mom, his three brothers, and me. It should be the five of us having a messy, sloppy, sobbing affair where we cling to each other because we are all we have left. The marble floors should be slick with our tears. It isn’t. We sit here, straight backed, completely composed as if death is just a passing expiration date and our small, insignificant world has not been split open and left gaping.

***

I’m in my room, staring at the ceiling. The funeral service was hours ago.

The house feels empty and cold. I hear a stifled whimper from down the hall.

Mom.

Probably crying into a pillow so the house can’t hear, but it can. It seems unfair she can’t wail aloud, so loud  the house’s hundred-year-old studs tremble.

She doesn’t. I don’t either. We cry in our own rooms, remembering a man who will never be here again.

The house creaks. Maybe it feels the weight of our grief, maybe the floorboards are buckling because the burden is too heavy.

I ache, desperate to forget the long battle with cancer, the blood sputtering out of his mouth with his last words—what where they? I can’t remember because the fear in his eyes overshadowed anything he said. Now the loss. I don’t want to feel this loss. Some divine entity has taken dull scissors and cut out a piece of my life and now I have jagged scars to remind me I lost too much. Too much.

I want to forget, because it hurts to remember.

I bury my head in the pillow, hoping to suffocate the memories, to choke out the pain.

Excerpt #3

“Have you ever been in love?”

I spill my popcorn on my lap. “I, uh, what?” I say, swiping off the kernels. The question catches me off guard.

“You know, in love.”

“No. No, I haven’t.” I shift on the couch, needing more space between us. “What about you?”

“Nah.” She flicks her hand toward me as if she is brushing away nonsense, but the hard look in her eyes says something different.

“Why?”

She points to the TV screen and the couple making out there. “Figured if you had been, then you could explain that to me.”

The guy sweeps the girl up and carries her into bed before they… you know. “Uh, sex?”

She bursts out laughing. “That too. But I was talking about what  it feels like to be, you know, in love. Totally, without question. Like, does that,” she points to the screen again, “exist?”

“Yeah, I think it exists.” I think of mom and dad—the way they kissed every morning, hugged a few moments longer than anyone else, laughed so hard they cried, and cuddled, shutting out the world, looking more content than these fakers on the screen. “It exists. And in real life, it’s better than that crap.” I say, suddenly uncomfortable by the moaning coming from the TV.

“I thought you said you’ve never been in love?”

“I haven’t. But I’ve seen it. And I haven’t ever seen anything come close to that in the movies.”

She opens her mouth as if about to ask a question, but then closes it and smiles, accepting my answer. “Well, it’s good that there may be something in life to look forward to.” She drops a kernel of popcorn in her mouth.

“May be?”

“Well nothing is guaranteed. Who knows, I may die an old spinster.” She’s smiling, but her eyes aren’t.

I think about the movie store guy’s possessive eyes, Jesse’s chair fiasco, and Dominic’s leering, my heart. “I doubt that.”

Excerpt #4

He smiles a bit wider and hands out the pin.

As, I reach to pluck it from his palm, he snatches my wrist with one hand, my bicep with the other and crushes me against his chest.

His grip is tight—too tight, it hurts—and the bend of him hovers over me, leaning in. I try to shake him off, but he doesn’t let go. I squirm as I feel his thumb trace circles on the inside of my wrist. The touch sends a skitter of sensation over me. Something tinges the air; a sweet, cool feeling brushes over my skin, making my knees want to buckle. He smells like mint, his breath tickles my face. I pull back, hating the sensations that please my skin and curdle my insides. Bile surges in my throat. I tear myself away from him, glaring.

“What?” He says coolly as if he hadn’t just bruised my arms with his clutching fingertips.

“That. Hurt.” I say. I don’t say he smells sweet or his breath is refreshing on my skin or his touch sends chills up my spine, delicious chills. I step away.

His smile is unnerving. “Don’t worry, Jade.” He winks at me. Damn that wink of his. “One day, you’ll like it.”

Why does He babytolerate the destructive bloodthirsty nature of Homo sapiens allowing them to rule over all creatures, abusing and exploiting according to their whims? Why has science been unable to solve the vexing mystery of our ancestor, the Missing Link? How could one planet evolve such complex and divergent examples of biodiversity? Can you imagine God ever saying, “To Hell with this mess that is Earth?”

The series “Species Intervention #6609” spans two hundred years, encompassing tender love between divergent species, political downfalls and violence of unspeakable order. It is an unfortunate tale of Armageddon and the remote possibility of redemption.

In Baby, Netty is a naive teenage farm girl given in marriage to an older brutal opportunist disguised as a successful citizen during the years of Prohibition in Sussex County, New Jersey.  After years of enslavement, Netty flees into the night from her rapist husband, traveling back to the farm worked by her parents, where she rescues an unfamiliar damaged creature she finds in a cave in the woods of her childhood, falling in love with the enigmatic creature she names Baby. Together they find happiness and fulfillment despite the changes to Netty’s body wrought by the proximity of the unusual creature.

When a handsome Italian stranger comes into Netty’s life, complications ensue as she falls in love while trying to hide the bizarre and wondrous changes to her farm and her body.  Netty, Baby and Wil strive to conquer obstacles thrown in their path by life, succeeding wildly until the heart-rending and astonishingly brutal climax to their story.

My thoughts:

Ok, I haven’t read this book yet, but I will sometime very soon, so keep a look out on my blog for the review, which I will also post on Goodreads. But the synopsis of the book as described in the piece above is enough for me to get my interest. Upon first reading it, it reminds me in an instant of the books written by Jean M. Auel, the Earth’s Children books. And I really loved those, so I imagine that falling in love with the books by J.K. Accinni wouldn’t be a problem at all. It has almost all the elements of a good story in this synopsis and I for one can’t wait to sink my teeth in this book.
