Pitch Black, a movie review.

Hi hot cute girly and boy geeks of mine. I had myself a mini Riddick Marathon and I loved it. So of course I had to review it for you, as always there are some spoilers.

Synopsis according to the official website:

When their ship crash-lands on a remote planet, the marooned passengers soon learn that escaped convict Riddick (Vin Diesel) isn’t the only thing they have to fear. Deadly creatures lurk in the shadows waiting to attack in the dark, and the planet is rapidly plunging into the utter blackness of a total eclipse. With the body count rising, the survivors are forced to turn to Riddick and his eerie eyes to guide them through the darkness to safety. With time running out, there’s only one rule: Stay in the light.

My thoughts:

Like a lot of people I watched Chronicles of Riddick first, in the movie theater and I loved it, so naturaly I wanted to see the first movie made. One word: Amazing.

The movie starts with a shot of some people frozen and a voice giving comment. Oh my, what a voice. When suddenly we learn it’s a spaceship and it’s being pierced by meteorites. Then the voice shuts up. Oh my again. Vin Diesel has a magnificent, rich, sexy voice. Makes me melt and all wobbly in the knees.

Vin Diesel plays Richard B. Riddick. Murderer and escaped convict. And I love how he plays a game with the survivors of the crash, following them, lurking in the shadows, showing up unexpected in places. So we learn in the beginning of the movie only the murderer Riddick. Amongst the survivors is a boy named Jack who has an interest in Riddick and tries to mimic him in how he looks and talks. It’s adorable in a creepy way.

Although this is a classic survivor stranded story it gets its edge with Riddick and his eerie eyes. Like he explains to Jack: “First you gotta kill a few people, then you got to get sent to a slam, where they tell you you’ll never see daylight again. You dig up a doctor, and you pay him 20 menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on your eyeballs.”

I also love the camera work on the world and his suns, being different colors. It gives is a real eerie feeling to it. And thank God for some good CGI, the monsters look amazing! They really build up the suspense of first small little critters to full fledge flying monsters. And by now Riddick seems a little more human. But also still giving only about himself to get of this planet. At every decision Riddick keeps you wondering, does he serves his own peruses or does he help out the group of survivors, who keep getting killed off one by one.

The big scene between Riddick and Fry is amazing. Riddick trying to win her over to leave the rest of them and just accepting his hand and fly of the damned planet. You see the struggle Fry has and also the tension between them. But Fry finally chooses to give her life for the group. So she and Riddick return to get the two remaining survivors, the Imam and Jack, who turns out to be a girl, not a boy.

And while they return to the ship they are again under attack, Riddick holds them off but gets hurt badly. So Fry goes out of the light to find him. The scene where she has him in his arms and yells at him to not give up is beautiful. And so the ending is shocking, Fry dying while being pierced by one the monsters and flown out into the abyss.

I love this movie, I love Vin Diesel, I love his eyes, and I love the suspension and tension. Rate 8.5 out of 10 for me. So watch this movie!

Love, your hot cute girly geek, Mendy
